Lantern
Take it out, put it back, explore!
Inspired by real, everyday behavior
We studied dozens of toddlers and noticed a pattern: they’re captivated by small openings—especially those just tight enough to give a little resistance. They push things in. They pull them out. They reach further. They get stuck. Then they laugh and do it again. This repetitive, hands-on play isn’t just adorable—it’s essential for cognitive and motor development.
Lantern recreates this kind of experience in a safe, open-ended way that children can return to every day, in endlessly different ways.
A 360° experience of "in and out" play
The large, soft dome lets toddlers use both hands—or even an entire arm—to explore from any angle. Some parts can be pulled out easily. Others offer a little resistance. Some are smooth, others bumpy or chewy. It’s a full-body invitation to experiment, improvise, and enjoy cause-and-effect.
Every part invites interaction
The abstract pieces look a bit like everyday objects—glasses, remote controls, keys—but not exactly. That’s intentional. When shapes are slightly unfamiliar, toddlers project their own ideas onto them. One piece might become a phone, a spoon, or even a hat. The result? Deeper imagination, more flexible thinking, and longer-lasting interest
Mix & match across the series
All parts from the 1curiosity series—Lantern, Nook and Carousel—are interchangeable. This means even more ways to experiment, combine, and invent. It’s open-ended play taken to the next level.
Designed for little hands, tested by real ones
Each part is sized to fit a toddler’s grip—easy to hold, pull, or switch between hands. We’ve used real-world materials: soft silicone, smooth plastic, stainless steel. These textures feel satisfying and familiar, encouraging sensory exploration in a way that’s hard to replicate in traditional toys.
No instructions. No wrong answers.
There are no flashing lights. No instructions. No right answers. Just a thoughtfully crafted object that sparks curiosity—again and again. Children don’t need guidance to enjoy the Lantern. They simply need a moment to discover it.
Built for real life
Lantern is made to be used, loved, and occasionally chewed. All pieces are soft and baby-safe, and the toy comes apart easily for a thorough clean whenever needed.
For the in-between age that often gets overlooked
Around 12–24 months, many children outgrow baby toys but aren’t quite ready for puzzles or educational games. Lantern was made especially for this phase. It celebrates what toddlers are naturally drawn to—household objects, textures, discovery—and gives them a space to explore freely and safely.
Designed in Japan
Each toy in the 1curiosity series is thoughtfully researched, designed, and developed in Japan—with a deep respect for how toddlers naturally explore the world.
